Potrero Canyon Park Security & Beach Access

Security

Portrero Canyon Park is immediately adjacent to the Huntington Palisades, and many homes in the Huntington overlook the canyon. The security aspect of the canyon is of particular concern to these homeowners because the canyon could provide criminals with a route to access their properties. The vegetation in the canyon is also a wildfire risk to these properties and the wider community.

The Pacific Palisades Community Council has been working hard to insure that the park is locked after hours and not open before sunrise and after sunset. The counsel has been told that the park will not be patrolled by park rangers due to budget issues. The park gates and the bathrooms below the tennis courts should automatically lock at sunset.

Concerned residents are encouraged to support the Pacific Palisades Community Council in these efforts and to make their views known to the Parks Department and to our elected representatives on the LA City Council. An email address has been set up to coordinate communications on this issue:

secureportrerocanyon@gmail.com

If you email that address, you will be included in future communications about park security.

The Palisades Recreation Center will administer the park during daylight hours. Call 310-575-8014 to report any issues or concerns during daylight hours. People observing trespassers in the park after hours should call the LAPD Non-Emergency Reporting line 877-275-5273. The wait may be long, but these calls are important because the number of reported incidents make a case for increasing the LAPD presence in our area. If incidents are not reported, LAPD resources will not be assigned.

Beach Access

The Pacific Palisades Community Council (PPCC) and its Potrero Canyon Oversight Committee have been coordinating a series of meetings with government representatives to discuss community concerns about George Wolfberg Park at Potrero Canyon, including concerns about the design of the bridge and trails to be built to provide beach access.

As you know, the Potrero Canyon Park is now open.   The main entrance to the park is located in Palisades Park next to the tennis courts at the foot of Frontera Street in our neighborhood. There is a second entrance on the far side of the baseball fields.

The park plans include an entrance to the park from the Pacific Coast Highway to facilitate beach access and connect with the bike path up through the park. Plans have include a hiking trail from Temescal Canyon and a bridge over the Pacific Coast Highway from the parking lot next to Will Rogers State Beach.

Funds have been appropriated for the construction of the bridge and a separate trail over to Temescal Canyon road. These plans are subject to community comment, and the PPCC has been coordinating a series of meetings with government representatives and agencies involved in these projects. We encourage you to attend these meetings and engage with the PPCC if these issues are of interest to you. We also encourage you to visit the PPCC’s website for the most recent information.
